Project Estimator

In general, the Project Estimator is responsible for coordinating with clients and vendors to prepare bids in accordance with client’s specifications.  To do this, the Estimator analyzes construction documentation and prepares takes-offs and quotes in excel.

More specifically the project Estimator is responsible for the following functions:

  1. Sales
    1. Correspond with contractors, vendors and team members in a professional and timely manner to explained product and pricing information.
    2. Work with the sales team to provide comprehensive and competitive bids.
    3. Navigate agency or private sector websites and find projects bidding or bid result information.
  2. Maintaining up to date bid information.
    1. Update and maintain documentation in Pipedrive, our customer relationship management application
    2. Develop and maintain resource information on products, vendors, subcontractors, government requirements, etc.
  3. Reviewing construction documents
    1. Reviews and interpret design drawings, specifications and blueprints to understand the scope of work to bid.
    2. Review scopes with subcontractors and suppliers when necessary 
    3. Review agency or contractor submitted documents and assess WS’s ability to bid on submissions
  4. Pricing material
    1. Quantify and organize material needs for jobs
    2. Obtain pricing for materials
    3. Analyze supplier bids to provide accurate pricing 
    4. Participate in development of Qualifications and Assumptions for Prime Contract 
  5. Calculating a final cost estimate.
    1. Prepare cost analysis in computer by recapitulating material, labor, equipment, subcontractor and overhead costs incurred in the installation of items.
    2. Maintain an effective balance between pricing to win and optimizing margin
    3. Work with Operations staff to ensure that general conditions and general requirements items are adequately represented in estimates 
    4. Makes estimates when predetermined standards are not available.
    5. Reviews estimates and revisions for completeness and accuracy.
  6. Preparing Documents
    1. Present bids in in accordance with company standards.
    2. Execute take-offs and input them into a computer spreadsheet.
    3. Generate concise and correct submittal packages as required for agency construction contracts.
    4. Compile accurate and complete project documentation for sales and manufacturing order entry.
  7. Facilitating the transition from bid to job
    1. Support delivery of final contractual budget to project field staff 
    2. Creates job folders.
    3. Provide Project Manager with an overview of the job and informs him/her of any project idiocrasies.
    4. Convey the information in an understandable way to our personnel, and to our customers through the submittal and meeting process
    5. Work with the production and management teams to create a thorough analysis recaps for subcontractor and supplier scopes of work.
  8. Completing other duties as assigned by Manager
    1. Attend departmental meetings as required.
    2. Photocopy documents and plans when printed copies are required.
    3. Seek out new ways to increase profitability.
    4. Material ordering if requested.
    5. Informs the immediate supervisor of any observed inaccuracies or omissions in quoted items or computer database.

    4. Ability to read, understand, and interpret contract documents, drawings, and specifications
    5. General understanding of construction scheduling
  5. Education and Experience
    1. Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field
    2. 3+ years’ experience in commercial construction supply estimating.
    3. Experience using estimating industry software. (Preferably Bluebeam and Pipedrive)

Work Environment

This job typically operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

This position may also require work on project job sites. This may entail working in a job trailer, and/or accessing various areas of the jobsite via scaffolding, lifts or other means to review field conditions.

Physical Demands

This is a largely sedentary role; however, some filing is required. This position requires the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand as necessary. The ability to walk upstairs may also be required.

This position may require some work on job sites and requires the ability to navigate jobsite hazards safely. This may include use of scaffolding, ladders, etc to review conditions in the field.

Position Type

This is a full-time position. Days of work are Monday through Friday. Our office operates between the hours of 7-4:30.
