Position Description
Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) Project Delivery & Engineering Branch is seeking one (1) undergraduate or graduate student engineer to learn about and assist with various components of engineering and project management work.  This internship will be in the Project Controls section of the Project Services Division.  The division’s primary function is to manage projects and provide engineering design, project support, and cost management services on public works capital projects.  The intern will report to the Senior Cost Engineer.

Learning objectives include, but are not limited to:

  • Practical application of cost control and civil engineering skills
  • Practical application of quantity-take off from design drawings, unit cost, and cost estimating
  • Practical construction engineering and project management support services
  • Plan review and miscellaneous water services related items for new developments.

The projected start date for the internship is late May to early June.  The internship is for up to 24 months, or graduation – whichever comes first.  We require a minimum one (1) year commitment for this internship.

Job Responsibilities
Under direct supervision, the intern will assist professional staff with:

  • Constructability review of existing Cost Estimating Guide (CEG)
  • Constructability review of plans and specification for upcoming capital improvement projects (CIP)
  • Cost and estimating procedures review and research
  • Preparation and monitoring of project budget/estimate
  • Coordination with suppliers, sub-contractors, and design consultants regarding labor, material and equipment prices.
Applicants must be currently enrolled either as an undergraduate or graduate level students, pursuing a degree in: Civil Engineer, Architecture, Project Management, Business, Construction Management, or a closely related field.

Students must be enrolled on either a part-time or full-time basis for the duration of the internship.  Students do not need to be enrolled over the summer months, but will need to provide proof of continuing and pre-registration for the Fall quarter. Undergraduate students must maintain a 2.5 GPA; graduate students must maintain a 3.0 GPA.

Licensing and Other Requirements:  A Washington State Driver’s License, or ability to consistently obtain timely transportation to various work locations with limited or no public transportation is required for this internship.

Additional Information
Hours: Basic work hours are between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday-Friday. During the school session, work hours will be scheduled to complement class schedules (15-20 hours per week). The intern may work up to full-time (40 hours per week) during breaks and summer months.
