The King County Road Services Division designs, builds, operates and maintains roads and bridges in unincorporated areas of King County. The division is committed to ensuring the county’s transportation system is safe and efficient for all uses and modes of travel. The Division is responsible for 1,500 miles of road and 182 bridges, 5.7 million feet of drainage ditches, over 44,000 traffic control signs, 78 traffic signals, and 50 traffic cameras in unincorporated King County.

The Road Services Division, Engineering Services Section, is currently recruiting for full-time short term temporary summer engineering technicians for Construction Management and Inspection and Utility Inspection Units to provide entry-level engineering technical support under the direction of higher-level staff. Positions are scheduled to begin and end work between June and September, 2018.

WHO MAY APPLY: This recruiting effort is open to the general public.

WORK SCHEDULE: Typical schedule will be 8-12 hour days, Monday – Friday, some may be on a night shift and may also occasionally include a Saturday or Sunday. Schedules are subject to change. This position is non-exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act and is overtime eligible. Schedule mandatory overtime and weekends may be required depending on the workload.

REQUIRED MATERIALS: The following materials are required: (1) completed and detailed King County application form and (2) answers to the supplemental questions. Open until filled however first screening of applications received will occur after March 13, 2018.

Job Duties
Construction Management and Inspection

Inspection related work on King County construction projects.
Inspect work and materials used while in progress.
Monitor and document work in progress.
Maintain complete records of fieldwork.
Assist in compiling project documentation
Measure and or compute items for progress payments
Provide on-site representation of King County Roads, Construction Management Unit.
Other related duties as assigned.

Utility Inspection
Inspection related work for utility permit holders.
Inspect work and materials used while in progress.
Monitor and document work in progress.
Maintain complete records of fieldwork.
Assist in compiling project documentation
Provide on-site representation of King County Roads, Utility Inspection Unit.
Other related duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL POSITIONS: Dependability, effective communication skills, enthusiasm to learn, willingness and ability to work in a diverse environment. Additional requirements are listed below.

Minimum of one year’s course work and or experience in engineering, construction management or closely related field
Knowledge of construction methods, materials and engineering principles including engineering mathematics
Must have good organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines
Skilled in using Microsoft Office products
Strong analytical and problem solving skills
Ability to review technical documents
Ability to collaborate, work effectively and make decisions in a team environment
Ability to work and communicate effectively in writing and verbally with a diverse team of technical, professional, and administrative staff
Ability to work independently and willingness to ask for help and guidance
Ability to work effectively with others in a work environment that embraces and encourages diversity in its workforce and where differences are valued

Supplemental Information

Work performed in the office and field construction sites which may be under inclement weather conditions and require walking on uneven, rocky or rough ground.
Must be able to safely negotiate and traverse steep slopes.
Must be able to bend and lift in order to load vehicles
Must be able to work around heavy equipment and other potentially dangerous activities associated with construction sites.
Physical activity includes lifting up to 50 lbs. at least waist height; carrying and moving objects.
Must be able to work flexible hours including extended construction work hours, and working nights and/or weekends when required.


Valid Washington Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one by time of hire
